Beyond Temptation

5/5 Stars

After one look at Lena Spears, Morgan Steele is convinced that he has found the perfect woman. Only one problem – Lena has turned Morgan down every time he has asked her out, and even went so far as to tell him she had more important things going on than “to be on another man’s list as his flavor for the month.”  Morgan decides to hire the beautiful real estate agent to help him find a home, convinced that once he gets Lena in his bed… she will never want to leave.

I loved Brenda Jackson’s Beyond Temptation for many reasons.

(1) Lena Spears is a tall, curvy woman, not your typical willowy, super skinny model type. I really like it when authors break the skinny mold and write about a woman with some hips and thighs.

(2) I like the spit fire attitude Jackson gave Lena’s character. She is not head over heels boy crazy like a lot of leading ladies in the romance genre. Lena has priorities that currently don’t include a man and her resolve doesn’t waver at the first sign of a handsome man with a sparkling smile.

(3) Lena is focused on growing her real estate business, taking care of her mother and providing a better life for herself. Jackson’s characters are usually uber successful from the start, and it is very refreshing to see a woman who is still on the road to success.

Of all of the books in the Steele series, Lena Spears is my hands down favorite female character. Although Morgan is the Steele, Lena steals the show! Comment: Who is your favorite heroine and why?

My favorite heroine is Rose from Vampire Academy, she’s a tough curvy fighter and proud of it. It’s nice to see heroines who are strong and not “naturally thin” (bella!). That irks me 🙂

I haven’t read Vampire Academy, but I share your same sentiments. Curvy heroines are just as awesome as skinny ones. And you don’t need a weight loss plot to go with your curvy gal either. She can be a healthy woman with curvy body, just like Lena!

I think I am more into the feisty, strong and sometimes vulnerable women inhabiting the YA, PNR and the UF worlds. Teagan in Tyger, Tyger and Meghan From Iron King/Daughter are both “normal” young women prevailing when the going gets tough. They do so without wealth, superhuman abilities, or physical characteristics that would amaze a stripper, They rely on themselves, sometimes on friends and family, and an intrinsic sense of what is right. I also really like Rachel Morgan(Kim Harrison), Mercedes Thompson(Patricia Briggs) and Merit (Chloe Neill), Meredith Gentry (LK Hamilton).

When it comes down to it, I guess it is not that I like one character herself; it is more that I like a particular type of character – strong female who does her best to do what is right.

That is probably moot. No one is going to say, Oooh my favorite is Cruella DeVille.
